Vergas is a small town with a population of approximately 350, situated in northwestern Minnesota in Ottertail County. Vergas residents have easy access to many other cities since it is located 50 miles from Fargo, ND, 15 miles from Detroit Lakes, and is surrounded by many smaller towns within a 10 mile radius. Known for being the “Home of the World’s Largest Loon,” a 20 foot structure on the shore of Long Lake, Vergas attracts many tourists throughout the summer months. The school district consists of the Early Childhood Center, whose curriculum aims to strengthen readiness for elementary school, Frazee-Vergas Elementary, and Frazee High School. Their elementary school provides exemplary instructional programs focusing on students’ success while their high school offers students a strong academic foundation with quality athletics and other extra curricular activities.
Vergas offers a variety of job opportunities with their most prominent industries being construction, retail trade, food service, and healthcare with many other employment options such as sales, extraction, production, and education.
At the center of 25 lakes within a 5 mile radius, fishing, boating, canoeing, and other water activities are prevalent in Vergas. Many residents head downtown for one of Vergas’ many festivals throughout the year to catch up with friendly faces. The Vergas Hairyman 5K was put in effect as a fundraiser for the Vergas Long Lake Trail Connection which aims to connect the current Long Lake Trail to the trail formerly known as “Tin Can Alley.” Vergas also hosts the Maple Syrup Festival in the springtime which includes a pancake feed, live music, homemade maple syrup, a 5K walk/run, tapping trees for sap, and shopping deals at local stores. During the summer, Vergas Looney Daze are held which features a parade, street fair, bean bag toss, and 5K walk/run.
